Battle of the Concealers: Too Faced vs. Tarte Cosmetics

Battle of the Concealers: Too Faced vs. Tarte Cosmetics

Concealer can make all the difference in a makeup look.

For me personally, concealer is a must! I use it on a daily basis, as it brightens my undereyes and hides my dark circles.

Over the years, my concealer collection has grown as I'm constantly trying out new products that promise to be long lasting, full coverage, matte, dewy, you name it.

Since my collection is pretty large, I decided to begin a "Battle of the Concealer" series, where I compare two concealers and let you know my thoughts.

In this series, I'll be comparing two new concealers I recently picked up at Ulta, the new Too Faced Born This Way Multi-Use Sculpting Concealer and the Tarte Cosmetics Creaseless Concealer.

Mind you, I haven't brought concealer for about six months or so, as Tarte Shape Tape is my everyday go to. (I mean, I own four shades)

Too Faced

In the new Born This Way Multi-Use Sculpting Concealer I chose the shade Vanilla for my skintone. There are 20 shades available.

According to the site, the concealer has super coverage, (which immediately caught my eye), fully loaded pigments, can be used to conceal, contour, highlight, and retouch. It also claims to provide a hydrated photo-ready complexion, with no flashback and is said to last 12 hours.

The product is 15 mL/ 0.50 Fl. Oz., and comes in a large glass bottle, almost like a mini foundation one.

Too Faced does have another concealer in the Born This Way line, however that one is dewy and not as full coverage.

The Test

The Too Faced concealer has a large doe foot applicator, similar to the Clinique Beyond Perfecting foundation. When I first applied the product under my eyes, I noticed that a little certainly went a long way. The super coverage claim definitely did not lie.

Consistency-wise, it felt a bit thicker than the Tarte Shape Tape but much lighter on my under eyes, if that makes sense. For instance, when I sometimes use Shape Tape, I feel my under eyes get a bit dry and with this Too Faced formula, I felt they were hydrated.

The first time I used this, I did set my under eyes with Laura Mercier setting powder, but did not bake and the product stayed put. Most importantly my under eyes looked natural, not cakey, while being very full coverage.

With a photo test, I did not notice any flashback. I have a picture on my IG using the product.

On another occasion, when using this product, I did not set it, and went out in the humid weather. The product did not move, or melt, etc. however I did notice some creasing, since I had not set the concealer.

I baked my under eyes on another occasion and liked the outcome as well. As a result, I feel this product works best when set. The coverage is truly incredible and my under eyes felt comfortable and did not feel dry at all.

Tarte Cosmetics

In the Tarte Creaseless Concealer, I chose the shade fair light neutral. ($26)  There are 30 shades available. This product has a skinnier applicator compared to the Too Faced one. Tarte previously released these concealers in a squeeze tube.

According to the Tarte Cosmetics website, the formula is vegan, waterproof, full coverage, hydrates the under eyes for 16 hours and has Vitamin C. The product net wt is 6.4 g / 0.225 oz.

When swatching this, I noticed that the concealer was on the dewy side, similar to the Kylie Cosmetics Skin one.

The Test

When I first used this concealer, I didn't know what to expect. I really enjoy the skinny applicator, making it easier to control the amount of product you want to apply. Sometimes with larger applicators, it's easy to get out of hand and apply too much.

This concealer has great coverage and provides a dewy, hydrated finish, however it is very thick. It's definitely opposite from Shape Tape.

I did need to set this concealer with loose setting powder for it to stay put and not crease, especially with my oily skin. It did look well in pictures as well and I did not notice any flashback, which was a plus.

When I used this product without setting it, my under eyes creased badly and were an oily mess. It did not look good at all.

This product does work when baking, but once again, the amount of hydration does not really work well with my oily skin.

I think this product will work well for those with dry skin, since it is hydrating - however keep in mind it must be set to truly perform.

Swatch Comparisons

Here's a comparison of the Too Faced and Tarte concealers up against some products in my collection:

Final Thoughts

After over a week of alternating between the two, the winner in this battle is the Too Faced Born This Way concealer. It just works well with my oily skin, stays put all day and has incredible coverage.

As I said above, the Tarte Creaseless one will probably work amazing for those with dry skin or dry under eyes. I will definitely be using it from time to time, but I know the new Too Faced one will definitely be my new go to. Yes, even replacing Tarte Shape Tape. ( I never thought I would ever say those words).

I would highly recommend the new Too Faced one and I may also go a shade or two lighter, for a more brightening effect.

Let me know which concealers you would like me to compare next? Talk to you soon.
