Influencers Desi and Katy share their beauty tips during Maybelline NY masterclass
Beauty influencer besties Desi Perkins and Katy DeGroot shared their makeup tips and tricks over the weekend during Maybelline New York's first ever masterclass.
I had the pleasure of attending the event and being just feet away from my two favorite Youtubers, thanks to Maybelline and Octoly. The Samsung 837 Space was filled with Maybelline activities all day. The second floor had dozens of Maybelline artists on hand to retouch makeup and there were even vending machines filled with mascara.
In case you're not familiar with who Desi and Katy are-- they're Youtubers, fashionistas and professional snapchatters (OK, I added that last part in.) But seriously, if you follow them on Snap, you won't be disappointed, they are very open with their fans and constantly leave us laughing with their down to earth personalities and inside jokes.
The pair answered questions pertaining to how they got started in the industry- which for Desi, believe it or not was an accident. She shared that she got started by doing special effect makeup for her husband, Steven, or Sven (as us Desi/Katy fans know him by), for a Halloween costume. It was from there that people requested to have their makeup done and so she brought a makeup kit. After awhile, Sven told her to download Instagram, which was not as popular as it is now. She shared that she did not want to download it since she already had "so many apps" on her phone already. But filters piqued her interest and so she went along with it and posted makeup looks everyday.
Katy shared that she began by starting a blog. She had been in between jobs and wanted to do something that was for her. Her husband John or Joons, as we know him by, insisted she begin filming videos.
It was through the industry that Katy and Desi met and became friends and had what they called "a stepbrothers moment."
Saturday's masterclass was the end of their week long New York fashion week visit as Maybelline ambassadors.
The event was streamed live on Maybelline's facebook page and fans were asked to tweet questions for the pair.
From sharing their must haves, to how they achieve their no makeup looks to glow tips, Desi and Katy kept us laughing and of course oohing over how blinding they made a model glow.
Tutorial
Saturday's tutorial consisted of a soft glam look with a bold lip, which they called their favorite go to look.
After all if you know Desi and Katy (aka Lustrelux on Youtube), you'll know they're all about warm tones, neutrals, bronze eyes and lots (and I mean lots), of glow.
Katy was up first, applying brow pencil to model Lauren's brows detailing how she gets her signature fluffy look. She starts with the tail of the brow, where she also applies more pressure and then applies short strokes at the front end, which should be feathery and fluffy.
She also demonstrated her cupids bow lip hack, which makes lips appear fuller. Her technique has to do with contouring right above the cupids bow to provide depth and then applying highlighter on the sides, making lips appear fuller.

Desi showed off her strobing skills and how she achieves her go to bronze eye look. She first applied highlighter above the model's cheeks, and above the forehead in a C shape. To intensify the glow, she sprayed her brush with setting spray and then applied more highlighter to the model's face. The glow looked stunning!
For the eyes, Desi used a Maybelline bronze kit for the transition shade and then used shades from the 24K Nudes eyeshadow palette for the lid. She shared that she often uses bronzer for the crease instead of shadows.
The besties also shared their favorite no makeup look- concealer, brows, highlighter and a lip color.
I'll be honest as soon as I heard this tip, I thought I would try it out for myself; so I did on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised at the natural looking yet put together look. This will definitely be one of my go to's for those days I don't want to apply foundation.

The final message the two besties wanted to get across to upcoming influencers or anyone looking to get into the field was to not get discouraged or feel you need to compare yourself to others.
"It's about showing your personality and being who you are," Desi said. She shared that she figured out who she was on camera.
Overall, the class was one to remember, especially for us Desi/Katy fans who constantly follow their every move on social media. Thanks again to Maybelline and Octoly for an amazing experience.
